Project Overview

mHealth Kenya developed the mLab system to address critical delays in laboratory result delivery that were impacting HIV treatment decisions. Our solution created a secure, efficient channel for transmitting viral load and early infant diagnosis results directly to healthcare facilities.

Project Scope

The project encompassed: 1) Android application development, 2) SMS printer deployment, 3) Secure SIM card authentication system, 4) Results database integration, and 5) Dashboard analytics. Implemented across 1,112 health facilities in 33 counties with CDC-PEPFAR support, the system handles both Viral Load (VL) and Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) results.

Key Outcomes

  • Transmitted over 1.7 million Viral Load test results to clinicians
  • Delivered 165,146 Early Infant Diagnosis results to facilities
  • Ensured all results delivered within 24-hour timeframe
  • Implemented password-protected security for confidential data
  • Created comprehensive result tracking and reporting capabilities
